Stub & Dolly had two daughters May & Ethel. Ethel would continue the tradition of dairying. In 1981, with her husband, Richard Brown, Ethel built the gray barn that still stands in the petting zoo area. She milked 30 cows & sold her milk to the makers of Cabot cheese, the Agri-Mark Co-op. She called her farm the Gran-Val Farm (short for Granville Valley) because when she went to use the Green Valley Farm name to register her cows, it was already taken.

Welcome to our

Family Farm!

Our farm was born in 1903 when Curtis & Bertha Hunt purchased 50 acres & a humble farm house to raise enough food to provide for their family. That same fall, their second son Francis “Stub” Hunt was born in the farm house. Stub would go on to expand the family farm; first as a young boy peddling chestnuts, blueberries & animal pelts and later by purchasing about 50 more acres of land & starting a herd of dairy cows. He & his wife, Lodema “Dolly” Hunt, peddled milk to the Granville, West Granville & Tolland communities in their model “A” Ford under the name Green Valley Farm. You can see their original glass milk bottles displayed in the Scoop.

Being a shrewd businesswoman, Ethel knew she needed to diversify her dairy farm to stay afloat. In the spring of 1991, with the help of her family, she started churning out & scooping up delicious homemade ice cream & the Gran-Val Scoop was born! The Scoop was originally housed in what is now the pavilion picnic area. After 10 seasons of success & tremendous growth it was time for a larger facility, so the Scoop moved into its current building in the spring of 2001.

Today the Scoop is still owned by Richard Brown & his daughter Avola Berndt. Together, along with Ethel’s sister May Nobbs and the next two generations, they are still scooping up their homemade ice cream, crafting decadent sundaes, creating beautiful ice cream cakes & packaging up quarts & half gallons for you to enjoy at home!
